In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Slavonski Brod and Osijek. In Budakovac in Virovitica area every seventieth inhabitant had the family name Matej.
Prevalence
About 60 people with faimily name Matej live in Croatia today, in 30 households. There were 70 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 9 cities and 7 other places, mostly in Zagreb (20), Slavonski Brod (15), Osijek (<10), Gunja in Zupanja area (<10), and in Slatina (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
