Matana families are Croats and they are mostly from the Island of Mljet. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Dubrovnik and on the Island of Mljet. In Ropa on the Island of Mljet nearly every inhabitant had the family name Matana.
Prevalence
About 220 people with faimily name Matana live in Croatia today, in 100 households. There were 60 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number more than tripled. They are located in 7 Croatian counties, in 10 cities and 18 other places, mostly in Dubrovnik (50), Zagreb (25), and in Babino Polje (20), Pomena (20) and Govedjari (20) on the Island of Mljet.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
