Marković families are frequently Croats and they are mostly from Bosnian Krajina. According to some sources they are from Ivanec near Varazdin or middle Bosnia and sjeverne Herzegovina, rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Tuzla Region, Bosnia (Tuzla area). In Viševice in Bosnian Krajina every third inhabitant had the family name Marković.
Prevalence
About 9400 people with faimily name Marković live in Croatia today, in 4000 households. There were 6900 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 40 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 116 cities and 831 other places, mostly in Zagreb (1920), Rijeka (280), Split (275), Osijek (275), and in Pula (200).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over three hundred times, the first time 1672 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
