Markov families are usually Croats and they are mostly from the Island of Murter , rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Livno area) and in Sibenik. In Mali Guber in Western Bosnia every third inhabitant had the family name Markov.
Prevalence
About 490 people with faimily name Markov live in Croatia today, in 210 households. There were 510 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number remains constant. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 29 cities and 43 other places, mostly in Murter on the Island of Murter (85), Zagreb (85), Kastel Sucurac (40), Split (25), and in Novo Virje in Djurdjevac area (25).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
