Mardešić families are Croats and they are mostly from the Island of Vis. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and on the Island of Vis.
Prevalence
About 300 people with faimily name Mardešić live in Croatia today, in 150 households. There were 450 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in 9 Croatian counties, in 15 cities and 7 other places, mostly in Komiza on the Island of Vis (160), Split (75), Zagreb (50), Pula (15), and in Kastel Stari (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1928 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
