Malešević families can be both Croats (the family name originates from Vinkovci area ) and Serbs. According to some sources the family name originates from Herzegovina. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Bosanian Posavina (Derventa area). In Malešević Selo in Duga Resa area nearly every inhabitant had the family name Malešević.
Prevalence
About 420 people with faimily name Malešević live in Croatia today, in 220 households. There were 420 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number remains constant. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 38 cities and 36 other places, mostly in Zagreb (105), Rijeka (30), Vojnic in Duga Resa area (30), Komletinci in Vinkovci area (25), and in Slavonski Brod (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1750 in source 18th Century Census.
