Malenica families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from Drnis , or Drnis area (Kljuc), rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Drnis and Split. In Ključ in Drnis every fourth inhabitant had the family name Malenica.
Prevalence
About 1100 people with faimily name Malenica live in Croatia today, in 440 households. There were 670 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 70 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 51 cities and 68 other places, mostly in Zagreb (225), Split (215), Sibenik (115), Osijek (40), and in Drinovci (35).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
