Makovac families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Buje area , often Italians (also from Buje area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Slovenia and in Buje. In Makovci in Buje area every second inhabitant had the family name Makovac.
Prevalence
About 200 people with faimily name Makovac live in Croatia today, in 80 households. There were 170 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 20 percent. They are located in 9 Croatian counties, in 11 cities and 22 other places, mostly in Umag (40), Makovci in Buje area (15), Zagreb (10), Kmeti (10), and in Murine (10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
