Macan families are Croats and they are mostly from Labin area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Pula and Zagreb. In places Pusti and Pajkovići in Labin area every third inhabitant had the family name Macan.
Prevalence
About 800 people with faimily name Macan live in Croatia today, in 320 households. There were 550 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 50 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 34 cities and 75 other places, mostly in Zagreb (155), Pula (60), Radosic (55), Split (40), and in Pusti in Labin area (30).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
