In Croatia, Lukan families are Croats (from the Island of Solta ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and Varazdin.
Prevalence
About 40 people with faimily name Lukan live in Croatia today, in 17 households. There were 60 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are only located in four Croatian cities and threee other places, mostly in Split (15), Sveta Marija in Prelog area (<10), Lepavina in Koprivnica area (<10), Srednje Selo on the Island of Solta (<5), and in Zagreb (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1923 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
