Lončar families are often Croats and they are mostly from Imotsko. According to some sources they are from Herzegovina, Like or Boka Kotorska, less frequently Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Imotsko. In Donji Gradac in North Herzegovina every third inhabitant had the family name Lončar.
Prevalence
About 5400 people with faimily name Lončar live in Croatia today, in 2300 households. There were 4900 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 113 cities and 521 other places, mostly in Zagreb (1205), Split (265), Rijeka (160), Imotski (150), and in Osijek (130).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned about one hundred times, the first time 1669 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
