Lazar families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Ivanec area , barely Hungarians (from Osijek area ) and Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Varazdin and in Ivanec area. In places Natkrižovljan , Križanče and Lipovnik in Ivanec area every sixth inhabitant had the family name Lazar.
Prevalence
About 1100 people with faimily name Lazar live in Croatia today, in 430 households. There were 1000 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 46 cities and 122 other places, mostly in Varazdin (85), Zagreb (70), Vinica Breg in Ivanec area (50), Osijek (40), and in Lipovnik in Ivanec area (40).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
