Kurtović families are often Croats and they are mostly from Herzegovina and according to some sources from Kurtovici near Klis , less frequently Bosniaks (from Podrinje, Bosnia). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and in Banja Luka Region, Bosnia (Banja Luka area). In Mičije in Bosanian Posavina every seventh inhabitant had the family name Kurtović.
Prevalence
About 1100 people with faimily name Kurtović live in Croatia today, in 470 households. There were 520 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number doubled. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 61 cities and 88 other places, mostly in Split (175), Osijek (130), Zagreb (110), Rijeka (50), and in Solin (45).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1705 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
