Križan families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Ludbreg area (Veliki Bukovac), rarely Hungarians. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Livno area) and in Zagreb. In Ljubunčić in Western Bosnia every ninth inhabitant had the family name Križan.
Prevalence
About 910 people with faimily name Križan live in Croatia today, in 370 households. There were 690 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 30 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 50 cities and 100 other places, mostly in Zagreb (175), Split (75), Samarica in Bjelovar area (60), Sesvete (50), and in Dugopolje in Solin area (50).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
