Kovačević families are frequently Croats and they are mostly from Bosnian Posavina and according to some sources from middle Bosnia or Mackovac Nova Gradiska area , less frequently Serbs and Bosniaks (from Bosnian Posavina ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Osijek. In Ljubače in Tuzla Region (Bosnia) every third inhabitant had the family name Kovačević.
Prevalence
About 14200 people with faimily name Kovačević live in Croatia today, in 6200 households. There were 13300 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 122 cities and 1061 other places, mostly in Zagreb (2205), Osijek (580), Slavonski Brod (525), Split (505), and in Rijeka (480).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over three hundred times, the first time 1689 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
