Kovač families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Cabar. According to some sources they are from Kapela and Lipovo Brdo near Bjelovar or Medjimurje, and Moravska (Hostalkova), very rarely Hungarians from Osijek area or Pécs (Hungary) and Serbs from Beli Manastir. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Osijek. In places Posušje and Zavelim in Herzegovina every seventh inhabitant had the family name Kovač.
Prevalence
About 8000 people with faimily name Kovač live in Croatia today, in 3400 households. There were 7300 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 109 cities and 659 other places, mostly in Zagreb (1515), Osijek (355), Cakovec (190), Split (180), and in Koprivnica (160).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over a hundred times, the first time 1669 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
