Knez families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Benkovac , barely Serbs, and Slovenes (Novo Mesto area). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Livno area) and in Benkovac. In Šopot in Benkovac every fifth inhabitant had the family name Knez.
Prevalence
About 1300 people with faimily name Knez live in Croatia today, in 530 households. There were 940 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 40 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 49 cities and 101 other places, mostly in Zagreb (195), Zadar (130), Biograd na moru (95), Split (65), and in Sopot (45).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1769 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
