Kmet families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Umag , rarely Italians and Slovaks (from Djakovo area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Pula and in Djakovo area. In Legovići in Porec area every fifth inhabitant had the family name Kmet.
Prevalence
About 230 people with faimily name Kmet live in Croatia today, in 90 households. There were 210 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in 9 Croatian counties, in 17 cities and 29 other places, mostly in Pula (30), Slavonski Brod (20), Rubesi (15), Osijek (10), and in Novigrad (10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
