In Croatia, Kern families are generally Croats (from Ludbreg ), very rarely Hungarians (from Osijek area ), and barely Slovenes (from Zagreb ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Banja Luka Region, Bosnia (Banja Luka area).
Prevalence
About 70 people with faimily name Kern live in Croatia today, in 40 households. There were 120 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 40 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 17 cities and 5 other places, mostly in Zagreb (35), Ludbreg (<10), Vinogradi Ludbreski (<10), Varazdin (<5), and in Garesnicki Brestovac (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
