Kavelj families are Croats and they are mostly from Imotski area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Imotski area and in North Herzegovina (Konjic area). In Obri in North Herzegovina every sixth inhabitant had the family name Kavelj.
Prevalence
About 190 people with faimily name Kavelj live in Croatia today, in 60 households. There were 100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 90 percent. They are located in 7 Croatian counties, in 13 cities and 8 other places, mostly in Split (65), Zagreb (25), in Krivodol (25) and Lokvicici (20) in Imotski area, and in Podstrana in Solin area (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1930 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
