Kasap families are often Croats and they are mostly from Zadar area , less frequently Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zadar and Zagreb. In Majdan in Hrvatska Kostajnica area every seventh inhabitant had the family name Kasap.
Prevalence
About 160 people with faimily name Kasap live in Croatia today, in 70 households. There were 200 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 20 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 13 cities and 15 other places, mostly in Zadar (40), Zagreb (35), Zemunik Donji in Zadar area (20), Majdan in Hrvatska Kostajnica area (<10), and in Rijeka (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1928 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
