In Croatia, Karinja families are almost entirely Croats (from Dugi (Long) Island ), very rarely Russians (from Zadar ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born on Dugi, Long Island and in Zadar.
Prevalence
About 30 people with faimily name Karinja live in Croatia today, in 17 households. There were 50 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 40 percent. They are located in four Croatian counties, four cities and two other places, mostly in Zadar (20), Sali on Dugi (Long) Island (10), Rijeka (<10), Split (<5), and in Ploce (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1924 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
