Kardum families are Croats and they are mostly from Knin area. According to some sources they are from Bosansko Grahovo area (Bosnia). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Benkovac and Zagreb. In Nunić in Knin area every third inhabitant had the family name Kardum.
Prevalence
About 1100 people with faimily name Kardum live in Croatia today, in 470 households. There were 650 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 80 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 36 cities and 67 other places, mostly in Zagreb (260), Zadar (215), Split (120), Sibenik (70), and in Vuksic (45).
Outside Croatia
At least 14 families with this surname emigrated from Croatia to: Germany (10), Australia (3), and to the United States (1). Family name Kardum (including: Khardum , Cardum ) is present in 20 countries worldwide. The family name "Kardum " is used by some 400 people in Guinea-Bissau , about 90 in Peru , and some 90 people in the United States.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1929 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
