Karanović families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Knin area , whereas often Croats (from Hrvatska Kostajnica area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Sisak. In Veliko Očijevo in Western Bosnia nearly every inhabitant had the family name Karanović.
Prevalence
About 260 people with faimily name Karanović live in Croatia today, in 140 households. There were 390 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 28 cities and 33 other places, mostly in Zagreb (50), Split (25), Grabostani in Hrvatska Kostajnica area (20), Garesnica (15), and in Grubisno Polje (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
