Karan families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Duga Resa area , whereas often Croats (from Djurdjevac area ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Duga Resa area and in Benkovac. In Jurga in Duga Resa area every third inhabitant had the family name Karan.
Prevalence
About 400 people with faimily name Karan live in Croatia today, in 180 households. There were 520 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 20 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 38 cities and 52 other places, mostly in Jurga in Duga Resa area (35), Zagreb (30), Split (30), Laslovo in Osijek area (20), and in Rijeka (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
