Kalanj families are often Croats and they are mostly from Novi Vinodolski , less frequently Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Benkovac. In Klenovica in Novi Vinodolski every fourth inhabitant had the family name Kalanj.
Prevalence
About 380 people with faimily name Kalanj live in Croatia today, in 190 households. There were 460 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 20 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 29 cities and 38 other places, mostly in Zagreb (60), Klenovica (35), Zadar (30), Rijeka (25), and in Vukovar (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1936 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
