Jelić families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Senj area. According to some sources they are from Dolac near Split, s the Island of Iz, Cavoglave near Drnis or Slavonia (near Zupanja), rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Bosnian Krajina (Teslic area). In Plavuzi in North Herzegovina every second inhabitant had the family name Jelić.
Prevalence
About 3900 people with faimily name Jelić live in Croatia today, in 1600 households. There were 3100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 30 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 91 cities and 335 other places, mostly in Zagreb (780), Split (170), Slavonski Brod (145), Ivankovo in Vinkovci area (145), and in Sesvete (110).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over eighty times, the first time 1689 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
