Hranj families are Croats and they are mostly from Lepoglava area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Lepoglava area and in Varazdin. In Rinkovec in Lepoglava area every fifth inhabitant had the family name Hranj.
Prevalence
About 170 people with faimily name Hranj live in Croatia today, in 60 households. There were 90 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 80 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 12 cities and 23 other places, mostly in Rinkovec in Lepoglava area (80), Zagreb (15), Lepoglava (15), Varazdin (10), and in Mikleus in Orahovica area (10).
Outside Croatia
Family name Hranj (including: Heranj , Chirany , Thrani and Hrani ) is present in five countries on three continents. The family name "Hranj " is used by small number of people in the United States.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
