In Croatia, Hell families are generally Croats (from Pleternica ), very rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Pleternica and Pozega. In Resnik in Pleternica every thirtieth inhabitant had the family name Hell.
Prevalence
About 20 people with faimily name Hell live in Croatia today, in 13 households. There were 30 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in four Croatian counties, in 7 cities and another small place , mostly in Resnik (10), Split (<10), Solin (<5), Pozega (<5), and in Zagreb (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
