In Croatia, Handžić families are predominantly Croats (from Oroslavje area ), rarely Bosniaks (from Semberia (Bosnia) ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Dubrovnik and Zagreb. In Kopice in Middle Bosnia every third inhabitant had the family name Handžić.
Prevalence
About 20 people with faimily name Handžić live in Croatia today, in 10 households. There were 10 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number doubled. They are only located in four Croatian cities and two other places, mostly in Zagreb (10), Dubrovnik (<5), Stubicke Toplice in Oroslavje area (<5), Osijek (<5), and in Sesvete (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1942 in source Phone Directory of the Independent State of Croatia 1942.
