Gredelj families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from Varazdin area. According to some sources they are from Mihovljana, very rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Varazdin. In Bočadir in Zlatar area every eighth inhabitant had the family name Gredelj.
Prevalence
About 320 people with faimily name Gredelj live in Croatia today, in 140 households. There were 350 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 26 cities and 40 other places, mostly in Zagreb (65), Mihovljan in Krapina area (25), Kutina (20), Varazdin (20), and in Tuhovec (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
