Graovac families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Benkovac , whereas often Croats (also from Benkovac ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Benkovac and Zagreb. In places Brgud , Donje Ceranje and Smilčić in Benkovac every seventh inhabitant had the family name Graovac.
Prevalence
About 340 people with faimily name Graovac live in Croatia today, in 170 households. There were 780 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased significantly. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 35 cities and 26 other places, mostly in Zagreb (50), Zadar (30), Rijeka (25), Smilcic (25), and in Split (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
