Gelo families are Croats and they are mostly from western Bosnia. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Livno area) and in Zagreb. In places Lusnić , Strupnić and Ljubunčić in Western Bosnia every sixth inhabitant had the family name Gelo.
Prevalence
About 650 people with faimily name Gelo live in Croatia today, in 240 households. There were 40 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number multiplied. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 28 cities and 51 other places, mostly in Zagreb (160), Zapresic (75), Sesvete (45), Kastel Luksic (35), and in Osijek (25).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
