Gajić families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Vukovar area , whereas often Croats (from the Island of Losinj ), very rarely Hungarians. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Osijek. In Crkveni Vrhovci in Pozega every third inhabitant had the family name Gajić.
Prevalence
About 720 people with faimily name Gajić live in Croatia today, in 360 households. There were 620 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 20 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 53 cities and 84 other places, mostly in Zagreb (175), Osijek (55), Rijeka (40), Pozega (35), and in Borovo in Vukovar area (25).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1749 in source 18th Century Census.
