Erceg families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Vrgorac , a prema nekimi izvorima from Mandalina near Sibenik, and rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Vrgorac and Sibenik. In Veliki Prolog in Vrgorac every fourth inhabitant had the family name Erceg.
Prevalence
About 2400 people with faimily name Erceg live in Croatia today, in 990 households. There were 1600 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 50 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 69 cities and 131 other places, mostly in Split (330), Zagreb (300), Sibenik (210), Vrgorac (130), and in Makarska (125).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned about one hundred times, the first time 1691 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
