Dželajlija families are generally Serbs and they are mostly from Daruvar area , less frequently Croats. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Daruvar area and in Pakrac. In places Batinjani and Donja Vrijeska in Daruvar area every tenth inhabitant had the family name Dželajlija.
Prevalence
About 80 people with faimily name Dželajlija live in Croatia today, in 40 households. There were 240 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased significantly. They are located in 10 Croatian counties, in 13 cities and 13 other places, mostly in Daruvar (30), Batinjani in Daruvar area (15), Viskovo in Rijeka area (<10), Zagreb (<5), and in Osijek (<5).
Outside Croatia
At least seven families with this surname emigrated from Croatia to: the United States (3), Germany (2), Australia (1), and to Sweden (1). Family name Dželajlija is present in two countries on two continents. The family name "Dzelajlija " is used by small number of people in the United States.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
