Crnjak families are Croats and they are mostly from Zadar area. According to some sources they are from Skradin area (Rupe). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Livno area) and in Zadar area. In Podgradina in Zadar area every sixth inhabitant had the family name Crnjak.
Prevalence
About 660 people with faimily name Crnjak live in Croatia today, in 250 households. There were 430 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 50 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 36 cities and 61 other places, mostly in Zagreb (120), Podgradina in Zadar area (115), Vinkovci (35), Sesvete (30), and in Sibenik (30).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over fifty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
