Carević families are predominantly Croats and they are mostly from Makarska area , less frequently Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Makarska area. In Gornja Brela in Makarska area every fifth inhabitant had the family name Carević.
Prevalence
About 830 people with faimily name Carević live in Croatia today, in 380 households. There were 960 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 41 cities and 84 other places, mostly in Zagreb (135), Split (95), Dubrovnik (40), Rijeka (35), and in Selca on the Island of Brac (30).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1750 in source 18th Century Census.
