Brtan families are Croats and they are mostly from Bosnian Krajina. According to some sources they are from Vrlika area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Middle Bosnia (Jajce area) and in Bosnian Krajina (Mrkonjic Grad area). In Vlasinje in Bosnian Krajina nearly every inhabitant had the family name Brtan.
Prevalence
About 670 people with faimily name Brtan live in Croatia today, in 240 households. There were 70 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number multiplied. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 42 cities and 69 other places, mostly in Zagreb (125), Split (30), Vuka in Djakovo area (30), Zapresic (25), and in Novska (25).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1925 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
