Bočkaj families are Croats and they are mostly from Krapina. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Krapina. In Juranšćina in Zlatar every tenth inhabitant had the family name Bočkaj.
Prevalence
About 560 people with faimily name Bočkaj live in Croatia today, in 220 households. There were 480 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 20 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 36 cities and 71 other places, mostly in Zagreb (85), Dekanovec in Prelog area (25), Lepajci (25), Krapina (20), and in Gornja Stubica in Donja Stubica area (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1683 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
