Benčić families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from Pazin area , rarely Italians (from Buje ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Pula and Zagreb. In Benčići in Pazin area every second inhabitant had the family name Benčić.
Prevalence
About 1600 people with faimily name Benčić live in Croatia today, in 680 households. There were 1800 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 56 cities and 176 other places, mostly in Zagreb (180), Pula (160), Porec (55), Bencici in Pazin area (55), and in Kraj on the Island of Pasman (50).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over fifty times, the first time 1642 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
