Benak families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Beli Manastir area , often Serbs, very rarely Czechs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Hrvatska Kostajnica area and in Beli Manastir area. In Paukovac in Hrvatska Kostajnica area every fifth inhabitant had the family name Benak.
Prevalence
About 150 people with faimily name Benak live in Croatia today, in 60 households. There were 210 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 21 cities and 14 other places, mostly in Slavonski Brod (20), Baranjsko Petrovo Selo in Beli Manastir area (20), Zagreb (10), Paukovac in Hrvatska Kostajnica area (10), and in Draz in Beli Manastir area (10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over forty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
