Beljan families are usually Croats and they are mostly from western Bosnia , rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Tomislavgrad area) and in Rijeka. In Dobrići in Western Bosnia every fourth inhabitant had the family name Beljan.
Prevalence
About 810 people with faimily name Beljan live in Croatia today, in 320 households. There were 260 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number tripled. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 43 cities and 60 other places, mostly in Zagreb (195), Djakovo (100), Bjelovar (65), Trogir (50), and in Split (40).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
