Begić families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Bosnian Posavina , rarely Bosniaks (from Cazinska Krajina Region, Bosnia) and Serbs. The surname Begic is mentioned around 1700 in Vrpolje. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Bosanian Posavina (Derventa area) and in Cazins Region, Bosnia (Sanski Most area). In Gradac in Bosanian Posavina every fifth inhabitant had the family name Begić.
Prevalence
About 2000 people with faimily name Begić live in Croatia today, in 840 households. There were 390 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number multiplied. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 82 cities and 234 other places, mostly in Zagreb (545), Slavonski Brod (100), Sesvete (65), Rijeka (65), and in Sisak (60).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
