Beg families are Croats and they are mostly from the Island of Rab. According to some sources they are from Dubrovnik area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born on the Island of Rab and in Rijeka. In Begovo Brdo Žumberačko in Jastrebarsko area every second inhabitant had the family name Beg.
Prevalence
About 400 people with faimily name Beg live in Croatia today, in 160 households. There were 440 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 28 cities and 31 other places, mostly in Palit (70) and Mundanije (60) on the Island of Rab, Zagreb (60), Karlovac (35), and in Banjol on the Island of Rab (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1923 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
