In Croatia, Basan families are generally Croats (from Opatija area ), very rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Rijeka and Opatija.
Prevalence
About 30 people with faimily name Basan live in Croatia today, in 11 households. There were 40 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 40 percent. They are located in threee Croatian counties, threee cities and 5 other places, mostly in Lovran in Opatija area (15), Opric (<5), Zagreb (<5), Bartolovec in Varazdin area (<5), and in Moscenicka Draga in Opatija area (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
