Barna families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Djakovo , also Rusyns (from Vukovar area ), very rarely Hungarians. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Djakovo and Vukovar. In Petrovci in Vukovar area every thirtieth inhabitant had the family name Barna.
Prevalence
About 100 people with faimily name Barna live in Croatia today, in 50 households. There were 90 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in 9 Croatian counties, in 11 cities and 8 other places, mostly in Djakovo (30), Vukovar (20), Kusevac (<10), Petrovci in Vukovar area (<10), and in Zagreb (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
