Barbarić families are Croats and they are mostly from the Island of Hvar. According to some sources they are from west Herzegovina (Citluk and Siroki Brijeg). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Split. In places Knešpolje and Dragičina in Herzegovina every eighth inhabitant had the family name Barbarić.
Prevalence
About 1400 people with faimily name Barbarić live in Croatia today, in 600 households. There were 850 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 70 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 60 cities and 112 other places, mostly in Zagreb (470), Split (105), Zrnovnica (60), Slavonski Brod (55), and in Velika Gorica (55).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over thirty times, the first time 1729 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
