Banović families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Cazinska Krajina Region (Bosnia), barely Serbs, and Montenegrins (Pula). According to some sources they are from Karpata. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Tuzla Region, Bosnia (Tuzla area) and in Cazins Region, Bosnia (Sanski Most area). In Dokanj in Tuzla Region (Bosnia) every seventh inhabitant had the family name Banović.
Prevalence
About 1800 people with faimily name Banović live in Croatia today, in 740 households. There were 820 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number doubled. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 76 cities and 175 other places, mostly in Zagreb (290), Split (160), Zadar (55), Pula (55), and in Rijeka (45).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
