Banovac families are Croats and they are mostly from Pazin area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Sibenik and Split. In Grebaštica in Sibenik every seventh inhabitant had the family name Banovac.
Prevalence
About 800 people with faimily name Banovac live in Croatia today, in 300 households. There were 620 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 30 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 28 cities and 49 other places, mostly in Split (185), Sibenik (95), Sveti Petar u Sumi in Pazin area (75), Grebastica (65), and in Zagreb (50).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
